Japan's Megaquake Points Researchers to New Warning Signs for Such Hazards

December 7, 2011:

The giant earthquake that pulverized eastern Japan in March and sent a towering tsunami roaring ashore is still shaking up the earthquake-science community. The house-destroying tremors and the killer wave of the Tohoku-oki quake may have been created by two separate mechanisms, researchers reported this week at the American Geophysical Union's meeting here.[San Francisco]

"We've never seen this before," said Gavin P. Hayes, a researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado, adding that now that the split personality has been detected, scientists have gone back to other giant quakes and found hints of similar behavior.
